Why and how?
A few colleagues and I were discussing business books and ones I would recommend. I lamented the fact that I wish had more time to read Business Books. So we started having Business Book Club (BBC) as deliberate mechanism to increase our Business Book reading. It has evolved from an office at lunchtime, then after work hours and finally online, in the format you see today.
Books for 2024
Get straight to the important stuff. Here are the books for 2024, giving a gender balance of authors this year.
1. Loonshots - Safi Bahcall
2. The Future Normal - Rohit Bhargava, Henry Coutinho-Mason
3. The Mind's Mirror - Daniela Rus, Gregory Mone
4. How Big Things Get Done - Bent Flyvbjerg, Dan Gardner
5. The Leadership Compass - Michelle Redfern
6. Being Wrong - Kathryn Schulz
What is the process?
Held generally the last Tuesday of every 2nd month (Jan to Nov) we meet and discuss the book we have chosen.
· Everyone votes for the book we read
· The highest votes, is the one’s we read
· Conducted every two months via Zoom, (January to November) so we will have at least 5 extra books read each year
· Reminders and links sent before the BBC meeting
· No pressure to have read the book, (although it helps with discussion). If you have read some of it you can still attend. We have found the general discussion encourages people to read the book post the club meeting. Worst comes to worst you can always Blinklist the book.
When and how do we meet?
Invites are sent, with reminders sent prior to the event.
On the last Tuesday, every 2 months from January to November.
The sessions are no longer that 60 mins and sometimes quicker.
Hot Tips
Here are some things we have learnt along the way.
1. Purchase all the books in one go – no waiting around for the book to arrive, you already have it in your hot hands, ready to read
2. Check the cover – ensure you have purchased the one the rest of us is reading, pictures included above.
3. Come even if the book not for you – the discussion will be richer for your thoughts, so come along and tell us what you hated and/or liked about the book
Book suggestions welcome.
Always on the lookout to broaden the input and perspectives we are putting into our brains. Recommendation’s welcome!
